Los Alamos, Spanish for "The Poplars," is spread over finger-like mesas between the peaks of the Jemez Mountains and the floor of the Rio Grande Valley and commands spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. At an altitude of 7,300 feet, Los Alamos' clean mountain air is pleasantly cool in summer, but warm enough for out door activities. Winter days usually offer just the right combination of snow and sunshine. Los Alamos is somewhat like a university town, with many residents enjoying outdoor activities as well as enjoying performing arts and other cultural pursuits. There are a large number of civic organizations to support interests of all descriptions. Popular activities include golf, tennis, hiking, swimming, ice skating, cross country and downhill skiing, and much more.
